UPDATE: Three crashes, six cars involved along Highway 55 in Craven Co. amid dense fog

Highway Patrol says the road is not closed and should be cleared shortly.

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A multicar pile-up along an Eastern Carolina highway has happened amid a dense fog advisory affecting much of the region.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, three separate crashes involving six cars happened along a stretch of Highway 55 near Sand Hill Road around 7 a.m.

A responding trooper says the original crash was a yield violation coming out of Sandhill. He says the following two crashes happened while waiting for EMS to arrive. The trooper says high speeds in fog conditions and the cars following too close to each other caused those wrecks.

The WITN Weather Team has issued a First Alert Status for Wednesday morning. They say visibility will drop below 1/4 mile at times through 9:00 a.m. because of fog.

Counties affected by dense fog advisory include Beaufort, Craven, Dare, Hyde, Jones, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties.

WITN is told some involved are injured and were taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center. Their conditions are not known at this time. Troopers say fog is the cause of the collisions.
