SHERIFF: Home invasion suspect shot by Nash County deputy

The sheriff’s office is asking people to avoid the Highway 64 alternate and Big Woods Road.

NASH COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A sheriff’s office in the east says a deputy shot a home invasion suspect Thursday morning.

The shooting happened around 8 a.m. along Big Woods Road in Nash County.

Sheriff Keith Stone said that the man, identified as Juan Salazar, 33, had broken into a home and stole some items.

Stone said after being confronted by the homeowner the man left the home. The sheriff said the homeowner called law enforcement. We’re told the suspect went down U.S. 264 Alternate on foot near Spring Hope, then encountered Sgt. Miguel Salazar.

Stone said the suspect armed with some type of weapon charged at the deputy who then fired one shot hitting the man.

The sheriff said the man was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh and is in critical but stable condition.

Sgt. Salazar, a seven year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was not injured.

There does not appear to be any relation between the two men beyond their name.

Sgt. Salazar is on administrative leave. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case.
