POLICE:  Additional charges for people arrested after shootout with officers in New Bern

Police say officers were met with gunfire when they arrived

NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – Several people arrested surrounding a shooting in New Bern are now facing more charges, police say.

Seven people were arrested Saturday morning around 5:20 a.m. after the shooting involving officers on Contentnea Avenue.

Police say the new charges come after they found evidence from the people in the residence.

A 17-year-old juvenile was charged with an assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Nikia Lyons, 47, was charged and arrested for trafficking opium/heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, and maintaining a place for controlled substances. She is being held under a secured bond of $1,850,000.

Kyereek Hicks, 18, was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

He was given a secured bond of $100,000.

Hicks was also charged with trafficking opium/heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, and maintaining a place for controlled substances.

On the additional charges, he is being held under a secured bond of $1,850,000.

Police say seven people are in custody after a shots fired call in New Bern on Saturday.

The New Bern Police Department says at around 5:20 am, they received a ShotSpotter notification in the area of 803 Contentnea Avenue.

They say officers were met with gunfire when they arrived.

Police say one of two officers then returned fire by discharging two rounds and retreating. The house was surrounded and secured.

While officers remained on scene, they say New Bern Alerts were used to notify subscribers to avoid the Sunnyside area, particularly Contentnea Avenue.

Evidence later obtained during the post investigation determined officers were shot at from inside the home.

Officers say no one was injured and scene was cleared five hours later.

Police say there is no reason to believe there is any further danger to the public at this time.
