LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Two students at an alternative school in Lenoir County have been charged and disciplined by the school system after a deputy was injured and received 18 staples to the back of his head.

Deputy Christopher Little was trying to break up a fight on a school bus Wednesday morning.

He is an SRO at the Lenoir County Learning Academy. That’s located at the Baptist Children’s Home on Kennedy Home Road.

The school is the county’s alternative school for middle and high school students.

Around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Little was trying to break up a fight between two students. Deputies say Little was assaulted and first transported to UNC Lenoir Health Care and then to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.

The two underage students were charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting serious injury, resisting arrest, and damage to county property.

Lenoir County Schools says those involved have also been disciplined by the school. “The injury to Deputy Little is certainly regrettable, and LCPS wishes him a complete and speedy recovery,” the school system said in an email to WITN.

Little and Sheriff Jackie Rogers will speak to the media tomorrow morning about what happened.
