Gold Star family mortgage paid off by initiative in honor of Memorial Day

USMC Master Sergeant Andrew “Andy” Sullivan passed away due to a service-related illness.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – An organization has paid off the home mortgage of an Onslow County family, in full, after a United States Marine Corps master sergeant passed away in honor of the Memorial Day holiday.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation says USMC Master Sergeant Andrew “Andy” Sullivan was diagnosed with service-connected Multiple Sclerosis.

Tunnel to Towers is honoring Master Sergeant Sullivan’s memory and service to his country this Memorial Day by paying for his family’s mortgage, ensuring they always have a place to call home.

Officials say his Multiple Sclerosis was due to toxin exposure from military burn pits. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he had difficulty breathing, and in April 2022, he died while awaiting a lung transplant, according to the foundation.

Officials say Sullivan’s 24-year-long military career started in 1998. He went on to complete multiple deployments including four Scout Sniper Platoons. Sullivan is also credited for improving the curriculum of the Marine Scout Sniper training program. He served as an instructor at the school in 2002, 2009, and 2016.
