Woman says her sister died in Lenoir County house fire

LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Tragedy struck a Lenoir County community Friday afternoon when a person was killed in a house fire.

Authorities confirmed there was a death at the mobile home on Vernie Heath Road in Deep Run. The sister of the person who died says it was her sister, 54-year-old Juanita Martin.

The sister says Martin was on an oxygen tank in the living room and was at home with her husband, who was taking a nap when the fire started. Martin’s husband could not reach her in the flames, and as the fire blazed, he went outside to alert his neighbors, who are Martin’s cousins.

We’re told Martin’s husband was taken to a hospital and his condition is unknown at this time.

Deep Run, Pink Hill, and Southwood fire departments were called to the fire around 3:45 p.m.

They were able to put out the fire in about seven minutes, and it appears the fire began in a room by the front of the mobile home.

The fire is still being investigated and it is expected to continue through Friday evening. Family members continue to stand by the scene waiting.
