JAMES CITY, N.C. (WITN) – An apparent collision between a truck and bridge overhanging U.S. 70 in an Eastern Carolina city is causing a massive traffic backup for commuters Thursday morning.

According to a WITN witness, U.S. 70 West closed down to one lane around 9 a.m. Pictures she shared show damage to a James City walking bridge.

Almost an hour later, the highway still only has one lane open and traffic appears to be backed up toward Coastal Regional Airport, according to WITN’s Deric Rush.

Rush there working to get more information.

The bridge connects Elder Street and Dudley Street.

It appears that a large vehicle hit the overhead sign and then hit the walking bridge, according to the witness.
