Wilson police identify man killed in officer involved shooting

WILSON, N.C. (WITN) – Wilson police are providing more details about a fatal officer involved shooting over the weekend.

Police said that officers went to the 900 block of Hood Street Sunday morning at 12:30 to check out a shots fired call.

Officers spoke with the caller in person who heard shots behind her home.

Officers began searching the area and found two people, one of which was identified as Ed Edwards, III, 48, of Wilson.

Police said that as officers were questioning the two, Edwards started walking away from them.

We’re told that as the officer continued to question him, Edwards turned toward the officer with a gun and fired.

Police said their officers returned fire, hitting Edwards.

The officers began to give aid to Edwards until emergency responders arrived who pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police have identified the officers that fired their guns as Officer H.M. Little and Officer R.R. Celaya. Little has been with the police department since 2022 and is assigned to the west district as a patrol officer. Celaya has also been with Wilson police since 2022 and is assigned to the north district as a patrol officer.

Both are on administrative leave while the SBI investigates.
