Weather closes section of Highway 12, stops Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry operation

OCRACOKE, N.C. (WITN) – The main highway on the Outer Banks is closed in both directions in one section due to weather conditions, according to the National Park Service.

Highway 12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island between the ferry terminal and the National Park Service Pony Pens in Hyde County is closed.

The National Park Service says the ocean over wash and unsafe driving conditions are the reasons for closing the road.

In addition, the ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke has stopped, also due to the weather and unsafe driving conditions in Ocracoke.

Both Highway 12 and the ferry are expected to be closed until noon on Sunday.

According to the WITN first alert forecaster Dustin Staples, Cape Hatteras Island has received more than 2.5 inches of rain since midnight.

Forecaster Staples says this makes one of Cape Hatteras’s top 5 wettest March in history with over 11.50 inches of rain for the month so far.
