Victim in Greenville shooting thanks first responders & police

Andrew Readyoff is in stable condition at ECU Health Medical Center.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – An East Carolina University research scientist is thanking first responders and police after he was shot on East 5th Street yesterday morning.

Andrew Readyoff is in stable condition at ECU Health Medical Center.

Police say the 27-year-old Readyoff was struck by gunfire as he walked next to Wahl-Coates Elementary School around 8:30 a.m.

Chief Ted Sauls says at least five shots were fired during the unprovoked attack by a man on a bicycle.

Late this morning, the hospital issued a statement on Readyoff’s behalf.

The man accused of shooting Readyoff in is jail on a $6.175 million dollar bond after a first court appearance this morning before a District Court judge.

Savell Hightower was spotted by police minutes after the shooting riding his bicycle down East 5th Street.

There was an exchange of gunfire and Hightower was taken into custody.

Chief Ted Sauls says Hightower fired first and then officers returned fire. In a video obtained by WITN, at least 10 gunshots were heard.

Neither Hightower nor the officers were injured. Police say the gun that Hightower used in the shooting was stolen.

The officers involved in that shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.

It is common practice for the officers in these situations to be placed on leave while the SBI investigates the shooting.

Hightower has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by felon and possession of a stolen firearm.
