UPDATE: Two dead in Pitt County house fire that shut down portion of Highway 43 North

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The bodies of two people were found inside a home that caught fire in one Eastern Carolina county

Pitt County Fire Marshal Jay Morris says a house caught fire at 3536 Highway 43 at 5:36 a.m. The fire shut down a section of the highway near MacGregor Downs Road and a Speed Way gas station but it has since reopened.

Officials are waiting to confirm with the medical examiner the identities and cause of death of the bodies found in the home.

Along with the Pitt County Fire Marshal’s Office, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, State Bureau of Investigation, and the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office are at the scene investigating the cause.

Red Oak Fire Department, Bell Arthur Fire Department, Winterville Fire-Rescue-EMS, Falkland Fire Department, Staton House Fire Department, Ayden Fire Department, and several EMS units all responded to tackle the fire.
