UPDATE: Suspect arrested in murder of Jacksonville teenager

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Police say they’ve made an arrest surrounding the shooting death of a teenager on Sunday.

Jacksonville police said that Jonathan Mills, Jr., of Hubert, was arrested Monday morning on an open count of murder for the death of 19-year-old Terrance Grant, of Maysville.

“This morning we were able to locate and arrest the suspect,” said Lieutenant Ashley Potter with Jacksonville Police. “Jonathan Mills has been taken into custody and charged with an open count of murder.”

Grant was shot outside of the Windsor Place Apartments on Western Boulevard on Sunday. Residents in the area heard noises in the middle of the afternoon.

“Out of nowhere, you hear a gunshot,” said Maliki Alleyne. “Following that gunshot was a male voice screaming in pain.”

When he arrived to where Grant was lying, Alleyne said police cars were already surrounding him.

“Once we got over there,” said Alleyne. “Cops were already on the scene and the kid was just laying there.”

He said that he moved into the area not even a year ago, and this is the second time law enforcement has shown up to the apartment complex. Now, Jacksonville Police continue to serve and protect the community when it comes to safety.

“It is a joint effort that has to be taken by all parties involved,” said Lt. Potter.

Mills is being held without bond.

Police say even though an arrest has been made, they are continuing to ask for anyone with information on the case to reach out to them at (910) 938-5034.
