Washington police and Beaufort County Sheriff’s deputies have the Food Lion on John Small Avenue in Washington blocked off and an SUV surrounded with caution tape.

Video and pictures sent from viewers to WITN show an empty parking lot except for the vehicle with its doors opened.

The sheriff’s office says an investigator found a man slumped over in the SUV and discovered drugs, a weapon and possible explosives.

“What we later determined was that the explosives are homemade explosives that are still to be determined by Cherry Point Explosive Ordnance Dispoal,” said Scott Hammonds, Beaufort County Sheriff.

That person has been detained for questioning.

The shopping center, which includes several other stores, was evacuated and is closed.

The Cherry Point Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit is responding to the scene.
