UPDATE: Identity of Marine killed in training accident in Carteret County released

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The military member who died in a training accident in Carteret County on Thursday has been identified.

According to the U.S. Marine Corps, Sgt. Colin Arslanbas enlisted on March 16th, 2020 and was assigned to the Maritime Special Purpose Force, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Authorities say Arslanbas was promoted to the rank of Sgt. on April 1st, 2024 and served as a Reconnaissance Marine with the MSPF, stationed on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

His decorations include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

The training accident remains under investigation.

Camp Lejeune says a Marine died last night in Carteret County.

The II Marine Expeditionary Force said the death happened during a training exercise.

The Marine was a member of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, according to a news release.

Names of service members are not released until at least 24 hours after the family has been notified.

II MEF says the death remains under investigation.
