UPDATE: Arrest made after shooting in Rocky Mount; victim in fair condition

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) – A man is now in custody following a shooting in Rocky Mount that left one injured.

On Saturday around 4:00 p.m., Police went to a shooting call at 600 East Grand Ave. and found 31-year-old Hakeem Battle on the side of the house with a gunshot wound.

After first responders gave immediate aid, Battle was transported to Nash UNC Health Care and later to ECU Health Medical Center for treatment where he was last listed in fair condition.

During the investigation, officers learned that Battle and 27-year-old Markell Copper began fighting, leading Copper to shoot Battle in the chest. Cooper was found on the scene and was taken into custody. Officers later learned that the two men are cousins.

Cooper was charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and discharging a firearm in the city limits. Cooper was taken to the Edgecombe County jail under no bond.
