WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) – The Beaufort County community is collaborating to promote disaster preparedness.
United Way is holding an Emergency Edge Expo that is scheduled for Saturday, August 24 from 9 am to 1 pm at Festival Park in Washington.
The purpose of the expo is to help community members connect with organizations and agencies that can help them not only prepare for a natural disaster (not just hurricanes) but also connect with resources post-disaster.
As part of the Expo:
- The Washington Fire Dept will demonstrate water rescues in the Pamlico River that morning (the Coast Guard has been invited too).
- Other demonstrations include proper fire extinguisher use, how to apply a tourniquet, etc.
- They are also working to secure 100 white pillowcases from local hotels so that young children can decorate their own “go-bags” which they can fill if they must evacuate their homes quickly.
The expo will also remind residents of certain tips:
· Seniors and elderly should bring all Rx BOTTLES for when the mobile pharmacy arrives.
· Pet owners: don’t leave your pets behind to fend for themselves and don’t tie up outside while it’s flooding. There are options.
· How many days do you pack for if evacuating to a shelter?
· What does it look like if you have an infant and need to evacuate?
· What do community agencies do to prepare for the hurricane season to keep citizens safe?
· Etc.
