U.S. Forest Service conducting controlled burn today

New Bern, N.C. (WITN) – The U.S. Forest Service will be conducting a 517 acre controlled burn today off of Lake Road near the communities of Havelock and MCAS Cherry Point.

The purpose for this burn is to reduce potential wildfire fuels that have built up on the forest floor and improve forest health by supporting native, fire-adapted species.

A helicopter will be used to monitor and assist burn operations. No drones are allowed in the area during burn operations.

They ask that anyone near the burn unit to pay attention to any posted signs and watch carefully for wildland firefighters and personnel working in the area. Also, wind speed and direction will be monitored to try and limit smoke impacts on nearby communities.
