Two brothers killed, father injured in Bertie County crash

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Two brothers are dead and their father airlifted to a trauma center after a head-on crash in Bertie County.

The Highway Patrol said the accident happened Sunday around 1:20 p.m. on Highway 11, north of Lewiston Woodville.

The boys were in a car driven by their father, 38-year-old Brandon Hawks, of Eure.

Troopers said a vehicle in front of Hawks was making a right turn into a driveway and that the man swerved into the other lane to avoid a collision. They said he then struck an oncoming SUV head-on, running off the road and hitting a tree.

The Highway Patrol said 13-year-old Ayden Hawks was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the crash, while 11-year-old Keeton Hawks was trapped in the wreckage. Both brothers died at the scene.

The father was flown to ECU Health Medical Center for his injuries. This afternoon, the hospital says Hawks was in fair condition.

The other vehicle was driven by Kimberly Adams, 30, of Kinston. She, her husband, and two children had minor injuries, according to troopers.

The Highway Patrol said charges are pending in the crash.
