Trucker charged after tanker carrying anhydrous ammonia crashes in Beaufort County

BLOUNTS CREEK, N.C. (WITN) – A trucker has been charged after troopers say he crashed his tanker hauling toxic chemicals, closing an Eastern Carolina highway for much of Sunday.

The crash happened on Highway 33 in the Blounts Creek area of Beaufort County.

The Highway Patrol has charged the driver, 42-year-old Daquan Beard of Newark, New Jersey, with failure to maintain lane and failure to wear a seatbelt.

The tanker was loaded with anhydrous ammonia, a chemical that can be deadly if inhaled in high concentrations.

Emergency officials said the tanker lost control and rolled several times before landing on the side of the highway.

None of the hazardous material in the tanker leaked out, according to the fire department.
