GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Nigel was upgraded to a hurricane Monday morning. As of the 11 am advisory, Nigel had sustained winds of 80 mph, with gusts up to 100 mph. Nigel continues to show signs of additional organization and the system could intensify into a Category 3 hurricane by Tuesday.
Fortunately, Nigel will be staying well off the U.S. coast. The track continues to turn more northerly to eventually northwesterly over the next 5 days keeping the storm well out in the deep Atlantic.
In addition to Nigel, the National Hurricane Center is watching two other areas of possible development by late in the week.
Closer to home, there is a window of opportunity that could open up for development off the coast of Florida or Georgia late this week. The chance of development is at 30%. Interests from Florida to the Carolinas should keep a close on this area of possible development, as forecast guidance continues to project an area of low pressure bringing coastal impacts along the coast into the weekend. It is too early to dive into the specifics, as the area of low pressure has yet to form and that we are several days out from any impacts.
