GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Extreme weather forced a popular youth sports event in the east to be temporarily moved to a different venue this week.
The ECU campus hosted the Little League Softball World Series in Greenville on Friday, after the original venue was flooded by heavy rain from Tropical Storm Debby.
The Tournament Director says completing the move was somewhat difficult due to a lot of moving parts.
“So when you look at running a world series tournament that’s being televised on ESPN family networks, it’s not as easy as just moving from one spot to the next,” says Ashlea Miller.
The scene at Stallings Stadium at Elm Street Park where the games were scheduled to be held shows some of the aftermath, with a tarp covering the field and television equipment also being covered for protection.
One softball player’s dad says he agrees with the decision –rather than waiting for conditions to improve.
“Obviously, this field drains better than the one that they accommodated for the world series so we didn’t miss out on any game time except for the rain,” says Jimmy Cerda.
Meanwhile, a sandwich vendor we spoke to wasn’t so happy — saying the move put some financial strain on her business for the weekend.
“Right now I have yet to tally up how many are left but I don’t think that many boxes have been opened yet, So, I think there’s quite a few products left over,” says Lauren Kalina.
Officials told WITN that the games will return to Stallings Stadium on Sunday regardless of weather conditions.
