TROOPERS: Woman high in I-40 Duplin Co. crash that killed man with broken down trailer

DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Troopers say the woman who caused a deadly crash on I-40 on Sunday night was high on marijuana.

The Highway Patrol says the three-vehicle crash happened around 8:15 p.m. near the Wallace exit for Highway 41.

Mildo Velasquez, of Willard, was heading east on the interstate and pulling a small utility trailer with a truck. Troopers say the trailer came off the hitch with only the safety chains holding it on.

Velasquez stopped on the interstate, according to the Highway Patrol, as did another driver who was a family member.

While attempting a repair, troopers say a third vehicle didn’t slow down and struck the car. The car then hit the trailer, causing it to jack knife and hit Velasquez, who died at the scene.

Two children inside Velasquez’s truck were not injured.

Troopers suspect Raylee Greico, of Raleigh, was impaired by marijuana. The 19-year-old has been charged with DWI, underage DWI, and failure to reduce speed.

The Highway Patrol says they will be meeting with the district attorney tomorrow to see if more serious charges should be filed against Greico.
