TROOPERS: Man severely injured in Pitt County accident after running red light

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Troopers say a man is fighting for his life at an area hospital after he ran a red light and crashed into a semi-truck.

The crash happened Wednesday afternoon around 4:37 on U.S. 13 at the intersection of the Highway 11 bypass.

The Highway Patrol said that Montarious Summerville, 23, was heading west on U.S. 13 in a 2016 Honda Accord when he ran a red light and crashed into a 2000 Freightliner semi-truck driven by Michael Gardner, 30, of Williamston, who was heading east.

Troopers said that Gardner was trying to turn left onto the Highway 11 bypass when the accident happened.

Gardner was not injured but troopers say that Summerville was taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville with life-threatening injuries.

Charges for Summerville are pending in the case, troopers say.
