Troopers investigating Highway 12 fatal crash on Ocracoke Island

OCRACOKE ISLAND, N.C. (WITN) – The Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that happened late this morning on Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island.

Hyde County confirmed that the crash on Highway 12 killed a person, but had no other details.

The Department of Transportation says the road near Devil Shoals Road is congested, and that will continue until around 3:20 p.m.

The road is also closed at the north end of the island between the Pony Pens and the ferry terminal due to sand and overwash on the highway. The DOT says that section of Highway 12 isn’t expected to reopen until Thursday evening.

It’s not known if the accident and the overwash are connected.

WITN has reached out to the Highway Patrol for more information on the fatal accident.
