TROOPERS: Duplin County deputy hits vehicle, other driver killed

DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A Duplin County man is dead after troopers say a sheriff’s cruiser hit his vehicle while attempting to pass.

The Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 9:15 p.m. Thursday at Cornwallis Road and Betholite Road, west of Rose Hill.

Joshua Patrick, 36, of Wallace, was heading south on Cornwallis Road and tried to turn left onto Betholite Road.

Troopers say Deputy Dylan Rotosky was behind Patrick, and was trying to pass when the crash happened. The cruiser hit the driver’s side of Patrick’s vehicle.

Patrick died at ECU Health Duplin Hospital, while Rotosky was taken there with non-life-threatening injuries.

Family members say Patrick was a manager at the Wendy’s in Wallace.

The sheriff’s office says the deputy was responding to a domestic dispute with possible weapons involved. Troopers haven’t said whether Rotosky was driving with his blue lights and siren on at the time.

The Highway Patrol Crash Reconstruction Unit was at the crash site this afternoon, assisting troopers with the crash investigation.
