TROOPERS: County commissioner-elect blew .18 after vehicle crash

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A woman who is running unopposed for an Eastern Carolina county commissioner seat is accused of driving drunk more than twice the legal limit.

Marianne Waldrop is Carteret County commissioner-elect for District 4. No one else filed for the seat in the GOP primary and no Democrat is running against her in the fall election.

State troopers say Thursday night the 59-year-old woman was involved in a vehicle crash on Highway 58 in Cape Carteret.

Waldrop is charged with driving while impaired, possession of an open container, reckless driving to endanger, and driving left of center. Troopers say the woman had a blood-alcohol level of .18. In North Carolina, .08 is considered drunk driving.

The Highway Patrol said Waldrop had made a left turn off VFW Road onto Highway 58 when she went left of center and struck another vehicle that was headed in the other direction.

Waldrop, who lives in Emerald Isle, is a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel.
