Troopers confirm identity of man killed in Ayden crash

AYDEN, N.C. (WITN) – The Highway Patrol has confirmed the identity of a man killed last weekend in an Ayden crash.

Earlier this week, family members said Marqese Perkins died in the mishap at Highway 11 and Highway 102 Saturday night.

This afternoon, troopers say the Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the 27-year-old Greenville man died in the fiery crash.

Troopers say a Winterville police officer tried to stop Perkins’ speeding car that matched the description of a car involved in an earlier assault.

The driver initially pulled over on Highway 11, but as the officer approached, it sped off.

As the car came up on the intersection of 11 & 102, the Highway Patrol says it ran the light and hit another car. It then crossed over the median and struck an SUV head-on in the northbound lane and caught fire.

There was not an active police chase at the time of the crash, the Highway Patrol said.
