Trooper resigns after charged with DWI in Jones County

JONES COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A state trooper resigned the same day he was charged with drunk driving after a traffic stop here in Eastern Carolina.

Trooper Donald Cuff, 40, from the Garner area, was charged with speeding early Sunday morning by a Jones County deputy sheriff. Cuff was stopped around 4:00 a.m. on U.S. 70.

According to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, Cuff was driving in his personal car more than 20 miles over a 60 mph speed limit. He was then charged with driving while impaired by the Highway Patrol.

A warrant says Cuff had a blood alcohol content level of .16, twice the legal limit in North Carolina.

Cuff was assigned to Johnston County and had been a trooper since 2013. The trooper was also a member of the Caisson Unit, a prestigious group of troopers used at law enforcement and state funerals.

Cuff was released on a written promise to appear. He has a September 13th court date.
