BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Emergency crews are dealing with a train derailment that impacted 14 train cars early this morning, according to officials.
Beaufort County Public Information Officer Brandon Tester says it happened around 1 a.m. Saturday near the new substation on Highway 306 headed into Aurora.
Tester said crews suspect there was an issue with the track that caused the derailment and that it will need to be repaired.
Tester says some of the train cars were carrying sulfur. One of the overturned cars started leaking, but the hot sulfur hardened when it met the cold air, so the leak did not present any further issues, according to Tester. Officials confirm there is no damage to property, no injuries reported, and no environmental hazards to report.
Tester says Norfolk Southern is now handling parts of the issue on their end.
