Tracking the weekend cold blast; Here’s the latest

Overnight lows will drop into the teens this weekend

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A major shot of arctic air is still on target to roll into Eastern NC this weekend. The cold blast will stick around through sunrise Monday. Temperatures will plummet to values we have not seen in Eastern North Carolina since Christmas 2022. As a result of the frigid temperatures this weekend, the WITN First Alert Weather Team has designated a First Alert Weather Day for through Sunday morning.

Sunday morning will be a designated First Alert Weather Day for the potential of experiencing frigid wind chills in the single digits to the middle teens, and air temperatures in the upper teens to near 20 along the coast. (WITN Weather) (01-21-2024

Sunday morning is still on track to be the coldest with temperatures in the teens and the wind chills into the single digits over inland areas. Even with the sun and temperatures back above freezing by the afternoon, northwest winds make it feel like the 20s and 30s.

To brace for the upcoming chill, there are many ways that you can stay warm, and keep your home prepared for the temperatures. For preventing frozen pipes, be sure to have the sink faucet dripping water, to establish proper flow. The flowing water will prevent the water from freezing by allowing the water molecules to be in a constant, steady state. The flowing water will also help to reduce pressure. Exposed outdoor pipes should be wrapped in insulation.

If you are using central air and A/C heating units, remove as much dust as you can from the insulation ducts, change filters and it is recommended to keep the thermostat around 70 to 72. If the thermostat is set several degrees above the initial temperature, some heating units may go into emergency heating mode. The mode will cause the unit to run constantly, leading to increased electric bills.

As cold weather is underway this weekend, make sure to protect your pipes, pets, people, and plants, to ensure protection. (WITN Weather)

Another thing to keep in mind are the vehicles. Make sure to check any open or loose hoses and fluids to entail they are working functionally, as well car batteries and transmitions. Be sure to visit your local mechanic shop for your cars maintenance needs.

To stay warm indoors, be sure to have extra layers of comforter blankets. Just a few extra blankets are enough to keep you warm by as much as 5° to 10° degrees compared to the surrounding environment. If you are heading outdoors for any length of time this weekend, grab the coats, gloves, hats, and scarves. A secondary or third layer of clothing is recommended as well.
