Toddler killed after accidentally shooting himself, according to police

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Police in one Eastern Carolina city don’t believe there will be charges brought after a three-year-old boy got a hold of a gun and shot and killed himself last night.

Greenville police said they got the call of a shooting around 10 p.m. at Wildwood Villas on Beech Street. Greenville police spokesperson Kristen Hunter told WITN the apartment belongs to the child’s aunt.

Police say an initial investigation shows the child got a hold of a gun and shot himself.

Under NC law (14-315.1.), guns are supposed to be kept out of the reach of children. But Hunter told WITN this morning that this case was not a violation of that law and that the adults in the home are believed to have taken precautions to keep the weapon out of reach.

According to police, the child was rushed to ECU Health Medical Center where he died.

This is the second child death in a month, where on January 14 in Pink Hill, a 3-year-old boy was killed after he shot himself with an unsecured and loaded handgun. Deputies charged Clarence Byrd III, 29, with involuntary manslaughter and negligent child abuse.
