Toddler dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – It was a tragic and heartbreaking night, as a toddler is dead after a Friday night shooting in Greenville, according to the Greenville Police Department (GPD).

Officials say on Friday, February 2nd around 10 p.m. Greenville Police and Greenville Fire-Rescue were called to the 200 block of Beech Street. An initial investigation suggests the child got a hold of a gun inside a residence and suffered a self-inflicted wound.

According to police, the toddler happened to be a three-year-old boy who had been shot and was rushed to ECU Health Medical Center. Unfortunately, even after emergency responders’ life-saving efforts, the boy did die.

GPD is withholding the name of the child at this time to allow the family to make proper notifications.

According to police, no charges are expected to be filed, as this was ruled an accident.
