Three people charged after shots fired inside Goldsboro shopping mall

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina shopping mall was closed today after a shooting just before noon.

Police say three people are in custody and no one was injured after shots were fired inside the Berkeley Mall on North Berkeley Boulevard.

Police have charged 21-year-old Jalil McDuffie, 19-year-old De’Maj Oates, and 18-year-old Tywan Bennett all with attempted murder, discharging a firearm in an enclosure, going armed to the terror of the public, and carrying a concealed gun.

The shooting happened just before noon. Police say the three knew each other and this was not a random act of violence.

The mall remains closed and will reopen tomorrow, according to police.

In addition to the mall, several nearby schools were put on lockdown.

Greenwood Middle, Meadow Lane Elementary, and North Drive Elementary were placed on lockdown, while Edgewood Community Developmental School also went into a soft lockdown out of an abundance of caution, according to the school system.

All of the lockdowns were lifted by police around 1:30 PM.
