Three dogs killed in Beaufort County house fire

BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Three dogs are dead following a fire at a Beaufort County home.

Emergency Management Director Chris Newkirk said that crews arrived to the fire just after 10:30 a.m. this past Saturday in the Rosedale subdivision off of Highway 264 outside of Washington.

Newkirk said that fire officials were told of the blaze’s location by a passerby but had been trying to figure out its location prior to that because they had noticed a plume of smoke in the distance.

Newkirk said that the fire at the Wharton Street home was started by a stove and several items that were nearby.

According to the Clarks Neck fire department, two knobs on the burner were found in the on position and that multiple items including an instant pot were on top of the stove.

Officials said the owner was not home at the time and was not hurt.

Newkirk said three of the owner’s six dogs died as a result of the fire.
