Thousands sign petition to get ECU fraternity removed from campus

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – There are calls for East Carolina University to kick off campus a fraternity where an alleged drink tampering and sexual assault occurred.

About 100 people gathered outside the Theta Chi fraternity house late Tuesday night. In videos obtained by WITN, protestors could be heard chanting, “real men get consent” and “kick them off.” A petition was also created to remove Theta Chi from ECU. It has received more than 3,000 signatures so far.

This is not the first time the university has investigated reports at Theta Chi involving drink tampering. On September 24, 26, and 30 of 2020, ECU looked into allegations of someone giving three people pre-poured drinks with some form of a controlled substance.

ECU records show that Theta Chi has twice been put on disciplinary probation by the university this year. One probation was from April 5 through October 1st for endangerment, hazing, disruptive conduct, hindering university conduct process, and violation of university policies. The other almost mirrored the other, from March 11 through October 1st, for alcohol, endangerment, disruptive conduct, and violation of university policies.

A description of the suspect in the alleged sexual assault is not available, according to an ECU alert sent out Tuesday.

Greenville police said they were notified on October 30th of a possible assault at the Theta Chi house.

Police said they have not received any reports of drink tampering related to the sexual assault case.

The national office of Theta Chi said they continue to investigate what happened at the frat house.
