Teen facing more charges along with parents after deadly Edgecombe County crash

EDGECOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) -A teenager is facing more serious charges, while their parents are also charged after a traffic crash last month killed a woman and injured a two-year-old child.

Rocky Mount police say the 17-year-old has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle and DWI. The teen’s parents, 49-year-old Antonio Vargas, and 55-year-old Anna Rivas, were charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The April 14 crash on US 64 Alternate at Springfield Road killed 29-year-old Quanisha Avent.

Police say the teen ran a red light on the Edgecombe County highway and collided with the woman’s vehicle.

The 17-year-old remains in the Pitt County Juvenile Detention Center under a $1,000,000 secured bond.

Originally, the teen was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and reckless driving.
