Teacher of the Week: Jana Humbles

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – This week’s WITN Teacher of the Week is Jana Humbles.

Humbles is a 3rd-grade teacher at Chicod School in Pitt County. She’s been teaching there for 13 years. Before that, she spent two years teaching 2nd grade at James W. Smith.

She follows in her mom’s footsteps as an educator. Her mother taught at James W. Smith, where she volunteered, solidifying her calling to education.

Humbles says her goal is to instill an evolutionary mindset in students with the quote, “Mistakes help our brains grow.”

Her multiple nominations echoed her ability to build confidence in her students and foster an atmosphere of community and teamwork.

One nomination said in part, “My daughter likes most of her teachers well enough, but has truly taken to Mrs. Humbles to the extent that she is sad to leave 3rd grade because she doesn’t think she will ever have another teacher like her. What 3rd grader is not excited about summer break??”

Paired with this outlook of faith is an opportunity for collaborative skill-building and project-based activities. She received the fall Going Local Grant from the North Carolina Farm Bureau to grow plants in her classroom. She and her students were able to grow herbs and share them with the student’s families.

Raised in Pitt County she gives back to her community by growing her leadership skills and those wanting a career in education. Humbles hosted and intern won ECU Clinical Teacher of the year and has been accepted into the Teacher Leadership Program.
