Teacher of the Week: Emily Sims

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) -Every Wednesday, WITN highlights an educator in the east. This week, Emily Sims is our WITN Teacher of the Week.

Sims teaches Kindergarten at Eastern Elementary School in Pitt County.

The Texas native has called eastern North Carolina home since 2017 and has always known she wanted to work with kids.

“My students know they are my “school babies’’ and that means I will love them hard… not only while they are in my classroom, but as they grow and change,” said Sims.

Over her 13 years of teaching, she found and believes academic education is important, but equally important is emotional education.

Sims says her favorite part of teaching is getting to love and nurture those strengths in children.

“My heart as a teacher is to treat my students the same way I would want someone to treat my own kids,” said Sims “Speak to them with kindness, love them hard, and push them to be their best!”

The last two years of her education career have been teaching kindergarten. Before that, she taught 3rd grade for nine years and two years in preschool.

Sims says teaching runs in the family blood.

“My great-grandmother was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Texas. She would ride her horse to school each morning and start the wood-burning fireplace so the building would be warm for the students,” said Sims. “That story about her always inspires me when I think about the things we are “lacking” in public schools.”

Sims says she expects her students to do hard things, and that she wants to practice what she preaches and always learn how to do things better.
