Sylvan Heights Bird Park co-founder to receive prestigious U.K. honor

SCOTLAND NECK, N.C. (WITN) – The co-founder of a bird park here in Eastern Carolina is set to receive a prestigious honor brought from the U.K.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park says that its co-founder, Mike Lubbock, has been awarded the honor of an MBE, or Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, by King Charles, III.

Lubbock is being acknowledged for his outstanding services for global wildlife conservation of water birds, Sylvan Heights says.

Lubbock won’t be traveling to Buckingham Palace to receive the honor. Instead, he will be presented with the MBE medal by the deputy British consulate general in a ceremony at Sylvan Heights Bird Park on April 30th.

The park says that speakers will include National Geographic Wildlife Photographer Joel Sartore and other prominent international wildlife conservationists.

Lubbock spoke with WITN in 2022 to reflect on his career which also included advising the late Queen Elizabeth on waterfowl.
