Suspect for car thefts in Bertie Co. arrested in Mecklenburg Co.

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office says a wanted car theft suspect is behind bars after being arrested in Mecklenburg County.

The sheriff’s office says Hasun Overton, 19, is suspected of stealing two vehicles from the Lewiston-Woodville area on May 2nd and May 30th.

Authorities say Overton, who’s from Charlotte, has ties to Bertie and Northampton Counties.

On May 2nd, deputies say a man went inside a Duck convenience store around 4:50 a.m. and came out to find his car missing. The sheriff’s office says it was found in Northhampton County almost a week later on May 8th.

On May 30th, a car owner went into a Tobacco Shop around 7:30 p.m. and walked out to find the car gone. Investigators say the car was found on May 31st in Garrney, South Carolina went Overton was running from law enforcement.

Through surveillance cameras and Overton using one of the victim’s bank cards, investigators with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office say they were able to link Overton to both vehicle thefts.

The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office says Overton is facing charges in Charlotte’s Mecklenburg County and Bertie County with an upcoming court date in Bertie County.

The Mecklenburg County jail log shows he was jailed on June 11th.

In all, Overton is facing five counts of felony larceny of a motor vehicle, attempting to obtain property by false pretenses, and flee/ elude arrest with a motor vehicle.
