Suspect developed in 1985 cold case murder of Pitt County woman

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Deputies say they have developed a suspect in a cold case murder that happened more than 38 years ago in Pitt County.

Virginia Harben was found dead at her home on Mumford Road, just outside of Greenville, on August 5, 1985. Deputies say the 63-year-old woman’s death was ruled a homicide.

Investigating her death as a cold case, deputies utilized evidence from the crime scene along with advances in scientific technology to develop the suspect who they say has been positively linked to the crime scene.

Deputies say they have submitted evidence to the District Attorney’s Office for their ruling on whether they plan to prosecute the suspect in light of the new evidence.
