Summer car tips from Greenville mechanic

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Hot days like Monday are tough on both our bodies and our vehicles. Experts say it’s crucial to prepare your car for the heat to avoid breakdowns.

Pugh’s Tire and Service Centers Manager Colby Pugh explains, “The A/C works hard to keep up, your engine tries to stay cool, and your fan runs more, all of which strain your tires and vehicle.”

Paula Newsome experienced this firsthand when her air conditioning failed. “I had to roll down the windows and drive with the windows down ‘cause it was so hot,” she said.

To ensure your car survives the summer heat, Pugh offers these tips:

1. Check Your Tires: Ensure they have plenty of tread and no dry rotting.

2. Check Antifreeze Levels: Make sure you have enough coolant; low levels can damage the engine.

3. Inspect Belts and A/C: If your belt has cracks, replace it, as it’s crucial for A/C operation.

4. Keep Coolant on Hand: Have extra coolant in case you run out.

5. Check Tire Pressure: Proper tire pressure is essential for safe driving.

Newsome also suggests cleaning out your garage to protect your car from the heat. Following these steps can help keep your vehicle running smoothly during hot summer days.
