State sees flu deaths jump by more than a third in one week

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – The state saw its largest number of flu deaths last week with 51 more deaths.

The state Department of Health and Human Services says that brings the total number of deaths to 146, just 50 shy of last season’s total.

The week before there were 43 new deaths from the virus.

Most of the 146 deaths were people 65 and older with 90, 50 deaths of people between 50 and 64 years old. and 17 deaths of 25 to 49-year-olds.

Flu season generally runs into May.
