“Sorry dad” yells Havelock murder suspect in court

HAVELOCK, N.C. (WITN) – A Havelock man who is accused of killing his uncle late Sunday went before a judge Monday morning.

Havelock police arrested Eric Ericson after a deadly shooting where he lived on Kyle Drive.

Judy Nebraski said she has lived in the area for decades and was surprised to hear about the shooting so close to home: “I’m shocked, but today you just don’t know the circumstances, you don’t know what brought it on.”

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

During the court hearing, the 39-year-old Ericson yelled “sorry dad” to his father who was seated in the courtroom.

Ericson is accused of killing his uncle, 66-year-old Joseph Scarangella, Jr.

Police say the suspect’s mother, Scarangella’s sister Anna Ericson, was not injured.

Anna Ericson told WITN her son Eric Ericson is schizophrenic.

WITN asked Thomas about this and he said “Any issues that the defendant raises, we will address those in court.”

A judge ordered no bond for Ericson, gave him a court-appointed attorney, and set Dec. 2nd as his next court date.

Ericson is being held at the Craven County jail under no bond.
