Sneads Ferry man charged in state tax case

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – A Sneads Ferry man is facing multiple state tax charges from a New Hanover County restaurant that he operates.

Officials with the North Carolina Department of Revenue say that 48-year-old Marteke Franks did not pay state sales tax that he collected at Fu Wangz, a restaurant he operates in the Wilmington area.

According to revenue officials, Franks is the sole member of the LLC that owns the restaurant that is located at 2105 Carolina Beach Road and is the person responsible for collecting and sending sales tax for the restaurant to the state.

Revenue officials say that from May 2016 to September 2020, Franks stole $79,894.22 in collected sales tax.

Franks was charged with five felony counts of embezzlement of state property. He appeared before a Wake County magistrate and was placed under a $25,000.00 secured bond.
