RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – Six more people have died from the flu this season in North Carolina.

The latest numbers released from the Department of Health and Human Services put the death toll now at 287.

That compares to 196 deaths during the previous flu season.

The six deaths are the lowest number of fatalities since the middle of December. In recent weeks, the number of deaths has seen a continuing decline, since reaching a high of 56 in early January.

Most of the deaths continue to be those 65 years old and over.

Flu season runs until the middle of May in North Carolina.
