PINK HILL, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina road was closed today because of a sinkhole.
The Department of Transportation says Jimmy Lee Road near the Duplin-Lenoir county line required the emergency closure.
Engineers are looking at whether a damaged culvert underneath the road can be repaired. It’s one of three six-foot in diameter culverts at the location.
The DOT has plans to replace the aging culverts, but because it could take several months to schedule and fund that replacement, they are evaluating if the road can safely be reopened with temporary repairs.
Jimmy Lee Road is expected to be closed at least until March 11th. Until then, drivers should use Burncoat, Maxwell Mill, and Seth Turner roads as a detour.
