SHERIFF: 3-year-old dies in accidental Pink Hill shooting

PINK HILL, N.C. (WITN) – A three-year-old was shot and killed this morning in Pink Hill in Lenoir County.

According to the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office, around 9:30 this morning, a 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with a handgun inside a home in the 5500 block of Murphy Road in Pink Hill. After being taken to UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston, deputies say the child died around 11 a.m. today at the hospital.

Officials say there may be criminal charges in this case, but those are pending until the investigation is complete.

“This is obviously a horrible and tragic situation and our heart goes out to the family and Pink Hill community,” Sheriff Jackie Rogers said. “Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all involved.”

This remains an active investigation by the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office.
