Sheppard Memorial Library names new director

Roman Leary will become the director of Sheppard Memorial Library on August 26th.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A new director with over 30 years of library experience will be taking charge of Greenville’s library system.

Roman Leary will become the director of Sheppard Memorial Library on August 26, says the library. He will replace Greg Needham who has been serving as director for the last 15 years and will be retiring.

According to the library, Leary was chosen by the Board of Trustees from among other qualified candidates. They cite Leary’s previous work as the Edgecombe County Memorial Library director since 2009 and his cumulative 30 years of experience in library service doing various tasks for his position.

“Roman really impressed both the library staff and the trustees with his passion, expertise, and charm,” Board Chair Rick Smiley said. “We are confident he will be an asset in our community and continue a long tradition of outstanding leadership.”

Needham said that he believes Leary will give the library a bright future.

“Leading Sheppard Memorial Library at this time in its history is a huge opportunity,” Leary said, “It’s already a widely regarded public library with an incredible staff and enthusiastic community support. My goal is to maintain and extend this tradition of excellence.”
