Senior shred-a-thon in Carteret County

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) -Residents are invited to a document shred event to help protect them from identity theft.

The event takes place Saturday, June 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Leon Mann, Jr. Enrichment Center located at 3820 Galantis Drive in Morehead City.

Items permitted for shredding are personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers and solicitations, receipts, and paperwork containing personally identifiable information.

Items not permitted are binders, metal hanging folders, binder clips, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, or electronics.

The Carteret County Aging Services shred-a-thon is funded by the Senior Medicare Patrol Identity Shred-A-Thon / Fraud Prevention Grant for residents 50 years and older.

The Aging services say you must provide proof of Carteret County residency, like a document showing their official address, a tax bill, a voter registration card, a utility bill, or another government-issued document.

Without proper documentation, participants may not be able to join in on the free event.

Businesses will not be permitted to use this event for shredding documents.

All shredded materials will be recycled.
